Aaron Wheelz Fotheringham Makes First Jump on MegaRamp in Wheelchair
Wheelchair athlete makes history with 50-foot MegaRamp jump
By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com
Lots of history has been made on the MegaRamp, mostly by skateboarders, for whom the daunting apparatus was unveiled a decade ago. This was in the form of first-ever tricks, youngest-to-perform-tricks, and so forth. But during a weekend exhibition in Brazil, Aaron Fotheringham, who has no use of his legs, sped down the MegaRamp's towering ramp in a wheelchair, soared artfully but nervously across a 50-foot gap, and negotiated an incredibly smooth landing, drawing raucous applause from about 10,000 fans.
The MegaRamp, however, is not finished with athletes after the gap. The down-sloped landing leads to a vertical quarterpipe wall, which sends athletes airborne anew. Fotheringham, 21, who was born with a birth defect known as Spina Bifida, nearly stuck his landing on the quarterpipe, too, but lost balance and tipped and spilled down the smooth surface to the flat area below. (It's worth noting that this happens on more than 80 percent of MegaRamp runs by able-bodied skaters and BMXers. Completing an entire run on the MegaRamp is that difficult.)
"Wheelz" Fotheringham, a wheelchair motocross athlete from Las Vegas, had made a special kind of history merely by clearing the gap and sticking the landing, on a big-air device that to this day is attempted only by a brave few top-level action sports athletes.
Inspirational? In the video Fotheringham admits to being nervous before and even during his run. But after all, he's only human.

WWII bomb detonated in Munich, Germany
This is not a test. This is a video of an actual World War II-era, American-made bomb going off in the center of Munich, Germany.
According to its description on YouTube, the explosive was discovered on Monday night by workers at the site of a building that was being demolished. Officials realized that the 550-pound explosive could not be defused, and decided on a controlled detonation. In addition, the report notes:
Overnight, 2,500 residents were evacuated from the area closest to the bomb, with others living further away being told to stay in their homes.Experts decided it was not possible to make the device safe because of its unusual fuse, which operated by means of a chemical reaction rather than the mechanical device that many Allied World War II bombs used.
Spiegel noted that the explosion blew out windows, caused some rooftops to catch on fire, and half of one house to collapse. But there are no reports of injuries. But this will certainly not be the last blast associated with a bomb from the past.
A bomb expert told the publication, "Unexploded bombs are becoming more dangerous by the day through material fatigue as a result of aging and through erosion of safety elements in the trigger mechanisms."
The video shows a spectacular explosion lighting up the night sky in a city neighborhood dense with buildings.

Investigators have learned that James Holmes, the man accused of perpetrating the largest massacre in American history, had received a significant number of commercial deliveries to his home and office, as they try to build a picture of the alleged shooter and the events leading up to the largest mass shooting in American history.
"What we're seeing here is some evidence of calculation and deliberation," said Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates.
Bomb techinicians spent much of the morning making Holmes' Aurora, Colo., apartment safe to enter, and investigators then worked into the evening collecting evidence and securing the scene, said Jim Yacone of the FBI.
After 7 p.m. local time, residents in neighboring buildings were allowed back into their homes for the first time since early Friday morning, though tenants in Holmes' building will have to wait until Sunday.
"An extensive amount of evidence" is being collected and will be sent to the FBI's crime lab in Quantico, Va., Yacone said.
Authorities conducted a controlled detonation today as they slowly entered the booby-trapped apartment, which authorities said was "set up to kill."
"It was an extremely dangerous environment. If [someone] had walked in that door, they would have sustained significant injuries or lost their life," Yacone said.
A robot driven by a bomb technician and dynamic destruction tools were used to slowly and methodically disable explosive devices while also preserving evidence, Yacone said.

A loud pop was heard, but there was no visible smoke or fire at the scene. The street outside the apartment was shut down and residents were notified of the explosion by a reverse 911 call.
Police said Friday that a large number of explosive devices and trip wires were found at Holmes' apartment in an "elaborate" set-up.
One official told ABC News there were wires everywhere and described Holmes as a like a mad scientist.
Some devices appeared to be strapped to boxes of bullets and what looked like mortar rounds, police said.
The "flammable and explosive" materials could have blown up Holmes' apartment building and the ones near it, police said.
After a thorough search of Holmes' apartment, police moved into the investigation phase, hoping Holmes' computer -- if he has one -- and any writings could provide a gateway to understanding his motive.
A former doctoral student, Holmes is suspected of killing 12 people at the screening of the latest Batman movie in Aurora early Friday morning. Fifty-eight people were wounded.
Authorities have finished sweeping the Century 16 theater and plan to turn it over to Holmes' defense on Tuesday and back to theater owners on Wednesday, Oates said.
Personal belongings that were left behind amid the chaos and carnage were recovered by Aurora police, who plan to work with victims advocates to help reuunite people who were in the theater that night with their belongings, providing there is no forensic link, Oates said.
Among the dead include Micayla Medek, 23; Alex Sullivan, 27, who was attending the movie for his birthday; Ohio native Matt McQuinn; and Alex Teves, 24.
Two other people died at the hospital, including 24-year-old aspiring sportscaster Jessica Ghawi. Police said 30 people remained hospitalized with 11 of them in critical condition. Bullets from the shooting spree tore through the theater and into adjoining theaters, where at least one other person was struck and injured.

Destructive landslide caught on film in B.C.
Destructive landslide caught on film in B.C.
By: Kyle DeNuccio
A Canadian news crew investigating a deadly landslide was caught off-guard when another large slide struck Johnsons Landing, British Columbia on Friday.
The journalists reporting for Canada's Global News narrowly escaped the disaster, along with one other boat docked at the shore's edge where the destruction took place. Upon hearing the rumbling mass of land headed toward them, both boats moved into safer waters. Francis Silvaggio, who was onboard with the film crew, commented in disbelief: "Five minutes ago we were there. We would have been wiped out."
The other boat in the video can be seen outrunning the massive logs that barreled into Kootenay Lake. The normally serene vacationing spot in Johnsons Landing saw brown waves surging out from shore after the first slide hit, while trees collapsed and debris piled into the water.
Emergency Info BC, the British Columbian Government's Twitter source for alerts on natural disasters put out an advisory shortly after the slide, writing, "Onlookers should keep clear of Johnsons Landing landslide area. [Please] allow emergency personnel to do their work."
Unfortunately, the warning came too late for some as a search crew of approximately 70 people set out to locate four individuals who police declared missing in Thursday's slide, which the news crew set out to investigate. On Sunday afternoon, the body of a man who is believed to be 64-year-old Valentie John Webber was found, The Canadian Press reported. Webber was declared missing Thursday, along with his two daughters, 17-year-old Rachel and 22-year-old Diana, neither of whom have yet been found. The fourth person who went missing in the slide, Petra Freshe, a 64-year-old German man is also still unaccounted for.
The rescue mission was handed over to the British Columbia Coroner's office on Sunday night. Despite the discouraging news, Chief Coroner Lisa LaPointe assured The Canadian Press that "searches for the remaining people are underway."

Ever wonder what would happen if hundreds of fireworks exploded at once?
San Diego experienced this phenomenon -- by accident -- when an annual fireworks display malfunctioned, setting off all of the fireworks five minutes prior to the start of the show. The Fourth of July celebration was expected to last 18 minutes, but went up in smoke within 15 seconds, according to the LA Times. (See videos of the show below)
One tweeter, @BenBaller, caught the incredible display in an Instagram photo that has been retweeted dozens of times:

MSNBC reports that Port District authorities blame a "technical difficulty" for the unexpected blasts.
Garden State Fireworks produced the show this year, and released a statement on Big Bay Boom explaining they had a team "working throughout the night to determine what technical problem caused the entire show to be launched in about 15 seconds."
